Would You Make Your Car a "Rolling Billboard"?

Gas prices have already broken the $4.00 barrier in the Capital Region this week, and they're already going higher. At an Exxon-Mobil on Central Avenue in Colonie, regular unleaded fuel has gone up to $4.09 per gallon.

According to AlbanyGasPrices.com, the average price in the Capital Region is now at $3.96 per gallon - up a penny from yesterday, and six cents in just the last week.

Of course, this news has many looking for ways to cut down on the cost of filling up. As NEWS10's Demetra Ganias reports, for some local drivers, that means letting advertisers buy it for them.

You're already driving all over town and paying the price. So would you be willing to put an ad on your car, in exchange for free gas? That's the idea behind My Car My Car. Founder Dan Wos says his website acts as a party host, introducing advertisers with drivers who are racking up miles anyway.

"Businesses are always looking for high exposure, affordable advertising, and regular people of the community are tired of the way gas prices are rising," Wos told NEWS10.

Here's how it works: advertisers log onto mycarmycar.com and click on "Driver Profiles". Inside are dozens of applicants, listed with information such as age, occupation, make and model of their car, how many miles they drive per month and exactly where their errands take them.

There are two basic ways for drivers to earn money. The first is the standard package: that includes placing a 2' by 3' vinyl door decal on each door and a rear view banner in the back window. That will get you $100 a month. The other option is to cover your entire car - referred to as a "wrap" - which will get you a $300 gift card for gas each month.

With this system in place, Wos can only respond with, "We're getting swamped,"

He says that there are about 150 drivers in the Capital Region right now, from real estate sales people to soccer moms, which are already signed up.

Once the vinyl sign is installed, drivers can agree to advertise for up to three months.
